It's supposed to help build good habits. You're trying not to have your character die, and you're penalized health points every time you don't complete a daily task or do a negative habit. For example, if you're a nail biter, every time you bite your nails, you hit the subtract button on the habit you've created called "Bite nails" (or whatever you choose to call it). Depending on if you set the task to Trivial, Easy, Medium, or Hard, it will subtract a certain amount of points of health. You only have 50 health points, so it encourages you to do good things during the day.
Each time you do a positive action, you earn experience points. When you earn enough experience, you level, which replenishes your health. You also earn gold, which can be spent on health potions or gear which makes you take less damage.
I haven't quite figured out the "fighting Boss monsters" idea yet and how it ties in, but I'll be sure to post an update once we do our first Boss fight! Right now Dena and I have challenged each other to two challenges.
Both of us suffer from depression, and sometimes caring enough to do small daily tasks such as brushing your teeth can be difficult. So we have those small tasks set as one challenge. The other challenge is self-love. We both have to pick something good (whether we see it or others see it) about ourselves and repeat it five times. It doesn't seem like a big challenge, but when you're down and feeling bad about yourself, choosing something good and repeating it can be as hard as climbing a mountain.
If you have any sort of illness that makes it hard to find the will (not the energy, that's completely different) to do the small tasks in your life, I would look into this as motivation.
If you just want to build good habits and you like little app RPGs, I would also look into this.
And if you don't mind browser extensions, it will reward and penalize you for being productive or wasting your time based on the websites you tell it are productive or entertainment. Of course, that means it's collecting the information on the sites that you visit. In my case, I have multiple users in Chrome, since I use one for personal stuff and one for gaming. I have the browser extension on the gaming user, but not the personal one, so that things like my bank's website aren't tracked by the app. I don't really care if it sees me going to Facebook and game websites on the gaming user account!
I'll keep you posted on how it goes. So far the app is amusing, and motivating. Usually I'm leisurely in the mornings. Today, I shot out of bed and brushed my teeth like a maniac, since I had set up all my daily tasks yesterday evening, and hadn't completed any of them that day. My character was almost dead! I had to save her life!
And yes, one of my "To-Do" tasks is a task in another game. Don't worry, I'm not planning on murdering anyone. At least, not anyone who isn't pixels on a screen...
